“Is it legal to marry your first cousin??”

Liam’s Answer

I have some of the most wonderful cousins on the planet, and when I was young, and didn’t know any other girls, marrying them was something I seriously considered. It’s a pretty common fantasy. As I recall, Elvis Presley even made a movie on the topic.

You’ll be interested to know that in some places, it is perfectly legal to marry your first cousin. And one really cool thing is that, under international law, a legal marriage in one place is recognised as a legal marriage in a place where that marriage wouldn’t be legal. So, for example, if you marry in Thailand, everywhere else in the world will recognise your marriage.

So, if you’re keen to marry your first cousin, but it’s illegal where you live, I’d make sure you take a little holiday, and get hitched where it is.

Remember, though, that just because something is legal, it doesn’t make it right. For example, it’s not technically illegal to wear spots and stripes at the same time. You won’t go to jail for loving Star Wars: Phantom Menace. And playing the piano accordion won’t see you locked up in solitary confinement (even though it should).

However, I suggest that if you are going to marry your first cousin, you do it in Las Vegas. At least then, you’ll be able to be married by Elvis, too.
